How To Determine Your Skin Type

Have you ever gone for a bra fitting, and been told that you're a completely different bra size than the one you had been wearing for years prior to your fitting? You probably feel relief, as your bra now feels a lot more comfortable. No more straps digging into your skin or back pain from improper support.

You may wonder how this relates to your skin, but using products that aren't correct for your skin type can create problems too, just this time with your skin.
You may find it strange that people may be using the wrong products, but it's more common than you think! In fact, you may be using the wrong products too and this can negatively impact your skin. For example, if you're using products for dry skin, but your skin is actually oily, then you're bound to break out frequently. Or if you're using products targeted towards acne breakouts, but your skin is dry, then you're going to struggle with dry, flaky skin that never seems to get better.

In this article we'll outline the typical characteristics of different skin types, as well as exactly what products you should be using when you figure out yours.

Getting Started

To start, we recommend cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser that won't strip your skin's natural oils.

Wait 30 minutes, then use a blotting sheet (a tissue works too) to gently blot your face all over. The amount of oil on the sheet will determine your skin type, along with the following characteristics.

Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, then you won't notice any oil on your blotting sheet.

Dry skin may appear as dull, tired looking and flaky skin that might have an overall loss of tone and elasticity. Dry skin has the highest risk of developing fine lines and wrinkles as the skin has no excess oil to prevent the signs of ageing. For this reason deep hydration and nourishment is needed.

Oily Skin

Dab your skin with your blotting sheet and notice where the oil is coming from on your face. If your skin is oily, then you'll notice grease on your blotting sheet after blotting every part of your face.

Oily Skin is characterised by a greasy looking complexion and large pores, and you'll have a higher incidence of blackheads and pimples. The good news is that your skin will age slower than a dry complexion, but you shouldn't have to deal with frustrating breakouts.

Be sure to read labels and avoid ingredients that are too rich and may clog your pores. These products are perfectly suited for this skin type.

Normal Skin

If you have normal skin then we urge you to embrace it! You might notice a small amount of oil on your blotting sheet, as your skin is perfectly balanced and these natural oils will ensure your skin has a healthy glow.

Normal skin is neither dry and flaky, nor is it oily. Don't skimp on your skincare routine though, as maintenance is important to ensure your skin stays looking its radiant best!

Combination Skin

This is one of the most common skin types. When you blot your cheeks you'll notice no oil on your blotting sheet, however when you blot your t-zone (your forehead, nose and chin) you'll notice some excess grease on your blotting paper.

This skin type may flake and peel in the cheeks, but you may breakout frequently on your t-zone.

If you have been confused about your skin type then we hope this clears some things up for you. Once you start using the right products, your skin will reward you by staying clear, youthful and glowing!
