Acne is a painful and often embarrassing condition that can seriously affect a sufferer’s self-esteem. While a pimple every now and then is completely normal and can be attributed to hormonal changes, frequent breakouts consisting of three or more blemishes is classified as acne. Acne, therefore can range from very mild, yet frequent breakouts, to full-blown cystic acne.
Perhaps you are going through some trouble with your skin right now. Chances are you’ve tried every product on the market aimed towards problematic skin, and you may even have seen your doctor and been prescribed prescription meds.
The problem with these types of treatments is that they are full of synthetic ingredients that will not only dry out your pimples, but the rest of your skin too. They also only offer a temporary fix, with the blemishes coming back often worse than before once you stop using the product.
For a more natural alternative that will help to heal your skin, prevent future breakouts, as well as maintain the delicate moisture balance in your skin, we urge you to keep reading.
What Is Willow Bark?
When we think of willow trees, a weeping willow may come to mind, like that wise old tree in Pocahontas. Did you know though, that there are a variety of different willow tree species? Willow bark used in skin care usually comes from a combination of white, purple, and crack willows. So as the name so clearly states, willow bark is literally the bark from willow trees.
Willow bark has been used for centuries to ease pain and inflammation in the skin. In fact, in the time of Hippocrates (400 BC), people were advised to chew on the bark to reduce inflammation and fever.
How Can Willow Bark Treat My Skin?
BHAs, or Beta Hydroxy Acids, are commonly found in products targeted towards acne as they have powerful exfoliating effects on the skin, and unlike it’s water-based cousins, Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Beta Hydroxy Acids are oil-based meaning they can penetrate deep into the dermis to clear out the pores and draw out toxins. Unfortunately, because of their synthetic nature, BHAs are very harsh and can have many negative side effects such as redness, itching, burning and swelling of the skin.
Willow bark is your skin’s saviour as it contains salicylic acid, a natural BHA, that will help to exfoliate your skin and stimulate new cell formation without the nasty side effects of synthetic BHAs. Willow bark also contains powerful antioxidants called flavonoids, as well as tannins, minerals and phenolic acids to rejuvenate the skin.
With Synthetic BHAs, it’s always recommended to wear a heavy sunscreen when exposed to the sun as it sensitizes the skin to sunlight. While willow bark will not do the same, we still always recommend pairing your moisturiser with a good SPF for extra protection!
